From 2010 – 2015 Matthew worked in a Consumer Credit litigation department, and has run many cases through the whole litigation process, including to the Court of Appeal. In addition to running the cases themselves, he also conducted the detailed assessment procedures which followed.
Matthew joined Clarion in September 2015 shortly after qualifying as a solicitor, to specialise in costs which is a constantly developing area.
His background in litigation means that he is well placed to understand unique and technical points which have arisen during the litigation, which somebody without his background might not spot. He is highly focussed on technical detail to ensure that clients achieve the best possible recovery.
Matthew will always tell his clients what they need to hear, not what they want to hear, which in our experience invariably leads to a far better outcome. He is commercially minded and does not simply focus on achieving the best order in numerical terms.
He has dealt with high value and highly complex claims involving a wide variety of law, including issues relating to assignment of contracts and liability for costs incurred pre- assignment, costs incurred in separate proceedings, insurance, professional negligence and fraud. Matthew has acted for both receiving parties and paying parties in costs proceedings, and can prepare bills of costs, points of dispute or replies to points of dispute, statements of costs for summary assessments and preparation for hearings as well as robustly conducting negotiations.
He also specialises in fixed costs disputes, and has advised in relation to numerous and varied cases, from the relevant regime where a claim settled by Part 36 to disputes over the reasonableness of disbursements and the applicable rules where a claim falls outside the scope to the relevant pre-action protocol which was nevertheless begun using the portal process.
Outside work, he has run as part of a corporate triathlon team and in the Leeds Corporate 10k raising money for charity.
