Lawyer comes 369th in charity swim

Comments

It may not sound like a great achievement, but when Mark Burns, managing partner , competed against 5,820 entrants in the Great North Swim, his time of just under 45 minutes to take 369th place in his combined age and gender group, was pretty impressive.

It may not sound like a great achievement, but when Mark Burns, managing partner , competed against 5,820 entrants in the Great North Swim, his time of just under 45 minutes to take 369th place in his combined age and gender group, was pretty impressive.

The event was just one of ten major races in the region that the Leeds lawyer has pledged to complete by the end of the year in aid of his favourite charities.  After his one mile swim in Lake Windemere, Mark headed back to Yorkshire the next day to participate in the Leeds 10K which Clarion sponsors, beating his target of finishing the run in less than 55 minutes.

Mark is undertaking his ‘decathlon’ in aid of his three chosen charities The Spinal Injury Project of the UK Stem Cell Foundation (UKSCF); the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charity Foundation) and Martin House Hospice for Children and Young People.

He is now almost half way through the events having completed the Ashbourne duathlon, the 10K Ilkley Trail Race, the Great North Swim and Jane Tomlinson’s Leeds 10K.  He still has some challenges ahead, participating in some of the region’s best known running events such as the Leeds Triathlon, the Leeds Abbey Dash and the Yorkshire Three Peaks.  In addition, Mark will be undertaking the more unusual challenge of taking part in the Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest Nottingham – a 10K run with ten gruelling obstacles!

“Realising that I am 40 per cent of the way towards my goal is very uplifting and the fact that I have already raised over £2,000 for my chosen charities makes it all worthwhile.  However, having reflected on such a hectic weekend, I have realised that a one mile swim followed the next day by a 10K run is probably not in the best interests of my health or my marriage!”
