Family team warns of January woe

Our family team is expecting a surge of activity in January as the pressures of Christmas coupled with the prospect of a fresh start for the New Year spell the end for marriages across the region.

In January 2010, the number of instructions in Clarion’s family team increased by over 140% when compared to November and December 2009. They are now readying themselves for similar levels of activity once the New Year breaks.

Justine Osmotherley, partner in the family team at Clarion said: “It is unfortunate but true that we often see a remarkable increase in the number of new clients coming through the doors by the end of the first week in January, and we anticipate 2011 will be no different.

“Whilst Christmas is often seen as a particularly happy family time, for many the tension becomes too much and this can lead to an increase in the number of separations. Thanks to the busy lives that parents and couples lead, Christmas is increasingly one of the few times during the year when families spend a prolonged period of time together, only to find that sadly, they can’t always ‘get on’ anymore.

“It’s also common for people to become nostalgic, look back over the last year and focus on their difficulties and feelings of unhappiness before deciding that enough is enough. Already in December, we’ve had a number of enquiries from clients keen to start divorce proceedings, but waiting until January before issuing them. Some have also sought initial advice to establish their rights before viewing the Christmas period as a ‘make or break’ time for them. Sadly, a large number of these decide to take their instructions forward.”

Helen Peace, managing director of leading property agent, Eddisons Residential, is in agreement. She added: “Every year, we see a marked increase in the number of people actively seeking and signing up to lettings during January.

“There are certainly a high level of general enquiries as people use the New Year as an opportunity to find a new home, but we also see a huge increase in separating couples coming through our doors, keen to find an interim, flexible home whilst they sort out the rest of their affairs. Sadly, it’s now a regular situation which has come to reflect the time of year.”
