Mental Health Awareness in Construction

As part of our commitment to driving quality in the construction industry, we’re partnering with Constructing Excellence, a platform for industry improvement which aims to deliver excellence through clients, industry and users working together.

In 2018, we launched Clarion’s dedicated construction team in order to extend our support to clients in this niche area of law. Headed by partner Phil Morrison, assisted by associate Humera Rashid, the team is able to draw on expertise from colleagues in other specialist legal areas.

We are now working with Constructing Excellence in a number of ways, including supporting their CEYH Awards 2019 http://ckegroup.org/cexcellenceyh/ceyh-awards-2019/. We will be sponsoring the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Award, a topic of particular importance to us given the work of our private client and employment teams who are very knowledgeable in this area and are often called on to provide advice. If you’re interested in entering, please click on the CEYH Awards link above.

During Mental Health Awareness Week (starting 14th May), we will be joining forces with Construction Excellence to host a seminar promoting the subject. Speakers will include:

Clare King, Legal Director, Private Client, Clarion
As a trained Mental Health First Aider Clare will share the importance of being aware of mental health issues and the benefit to the workplace.  Clare will demonstrate how you can create a more inclusive culture and the initiatives Clarion has put in place.

Joanna Dodd, Senior Associate, Employment, Clarion
Joanna often advises on issues around employees' mental ill-health and will explain when mental health conditions might be classed as a disability in law and what the employer's obligations are in this area. Joanna will also discuss the practicalities of managing absence linked to mental health issues, what adjustments might be necessary and appropriate, and how performance/conduct issues (which are or may be linked to an underlying mental health condition) should be
dealt with.

Eddie Murphy, Founder of Ollio Consult
Eddie will talk about the need for healthy buildings and the emerging concepts around biophilia in the workplace which incorporate design that promotes mental and physical wellbeing leading to happier, healthier and more focused work teams.
