Research commissioned by The Museum of London revealed that around 20% of women secretly keep items from their previous relationship; and that these keepsakes were hidden from their current partner!
As divorce lawyers, we often hear our clients have issues with the ex-girlfriends or the ex-boyfriends of their current partner. This is especially so if there are children of that relationship and so a “tie” between the parties. I was therefore very interested to read some research commissioned by The Museum of London. The research, which involved surveying 2,000 people revealed that around 20% of women secretly keep items from their previous relationship; and that these keepsakes were hidden from their current partner! When asked, the following were some of the items kept as keepsakes:-
• Engagement ring
• Cuddly toy
• Jumper/item of clothing
It isn’t just the women though who keep the items, around ¼ of men admitted to keeping a birthday card from a previous partner. It would have been interesting if the research had looked into the reasons for this, is it because they still have feelings for their ex partners for example, or is it purely innocent?
However, the research did go on to say that if the person discovered that their partner had kept items from their previous relationship then this would inevitably lead to some tricky questions being asked.
