Trainee Experience

Tracey Johnson-Dewhurst, Trainee Solicitor, Property

Having lived and worked previously in Belgium, I joined Clarion Solicitors LLP in January 2005 as a paralegal in the Commercial Property Department. In July 2005 I was offered a training contract and in September 2005 began my training contract with Clarion Solicitors LLP.

I spent my first seat (of 6 months) in the Commercial Property Department where I was given responsibility for a number of files and had the opportunity to get involved in a variety of different areas including title investigation, commercial leases, residential sales, plot sales, commercial and residential landlord and tenant issues.

My second seat (of 8 months) has been in the Corporate & Commercial Department, where I have had the opportunity to get involved in corporate transactions and various commercial and Intellectual Property matters. In this seat I have again had responsibility for a number of files. Working in the Corporate & Commercial Property department also given me plenty of opportunity to practice research and drafting skills.

On November 1 I moved to my third seat in the Commercial Dispute Resolution Department.

During my training contract with Clarion Solicitors LLP I have been given challenging and quality work. I can honestly say that I have never been asked to spend hours in front of a photocopier and have found that I have been given a substantial amount of responsibility and client contact. I have found that colleagues on all levels have been friendly and helpful, the team spirit is high and partners are accessible.

Clarion Solicitors LLP aim to equip trainees with the skills they need to be able to pursue not only a career in law but in a chosen field of law. Monthly reviews with the training partner are a means of ensuring that trainees are getting the training and support they need and give trainees the opportunity to discuss the seats they would like to do.

Clarion Solicitors LLP trainees are actively encouraged to join professional associations, participate in networking events and get involved local projects. During my training contract I have attended business breakfasts, lunches and awards dinners and networking events organised by Clarion Solicitors LLP Young Solicitors Group. I have also participated in the Leeds Council 'A' Level Student Mentoring Scheme for the last year and been a member of the Trainee Solicitors Group Committee.
