Trainee Experience
Joanna Downes, Assistant Solicitor, Employment
I started my training at Clarion Solicitors LLP in September 2004. My first seat was in corporate and commercial and from the start it was clear that I would not be spending my training contract photocopying and making tea. At Clarion Solicitors LLP trainees are given a high level of responsibility to run files, meet clients and draft documents. This is coupled with a high level of support from all members of the firm, so you never feel completely alone.
In general your work will be challenging, but interesting. In addition, all employees are encouraged to get actively involved in marketing and promoting of the firm. During my training contract I was captain of the Clarion Solicitors LLP Women's Football Team, represented the firm at numerous marketing and networking events, acted as General Secretary of the Leeds Trainee Solicitors Group and participated in the Clarion Solicitors LLP social committee. I am a mentor for three students, each at different stages of their academic training in law, and I have given a presentation about training at the firm, to students at BPP Law School.
From corporate and commercial I moved to corporate recovery, where I was given the opportunity to practice my advocacy skills, and then on to the employment department. In my third seat I realised that I wanted to specialise in employment law on qualification. I applied and was accepted by the firm and I am now an assistant solicitor in the Clarion Solicitors LLP employment department. I deal with both contentious employment issues, such as discrimination and unfair dismissal tribunal claims; and non-contentious drafting of employment contracts and handbooks.
Apply to Clarion Solicitors LLP if you are not afraid to take on challenges and get involved. Everyone here is proud of the individuality, the sense of humour and the refreshing atmosphere of the firm. My two years of training have flown by and I now feel ready to take on the role of a qualified solicitor.
